Have you ever wondered why after leaving a party you hear a ringing noise in your ear? This is because of tinnitus; tinnitus causes the ringing of the ear in order to adjust back to the normal volume level. If this continues to occur it will eventually lead to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). NIHL can be caused by the playing of loud music close to your ear, or even by the television being too loud. Sadly this is only a minor hearing impairment; some people are in fact born with not preventable hearing loss.
Wikipedia defines Hearing Impaired as a condition wherein the ability to detect certain frequencies of sound are completely or partially impaired. When applied to humans, the term hearing impaired is rejected by the majority of deaf people where the terms deaf and hard-of-hearing are preferred. Some people are born death but yet others gradually lose their hearing. Other factors might include ageing, as we age more of us will probably develop some type of disability. However some people may lose their hearing after they have learned some type of language. In the mid 90’s, 8.8 million people, age six and over, had a hard time seeing. However 10.1 million People had difficulty hearing.
Many people who are born death learn (ASL) American Sign Language as their first language. Although sign language is universal, there are many other ways in which a hearing impaired person can communicate. A machine with a keyboard is often used for the disabled to type what they want to say, and a little computer will read it out loud. Communication is an issue when it comes to lip reading. Lip reading can be used but sometimes people do not speak clearly. Many people with a hearing disability rely on the hearing aid. The hearing aid has become so advanced, now hearing aids can be implanted and connected to the ear.
I simply cannot imagine what it would feel like to not hear well or at all. People with any type of disability must be strong people, because they work twice as hard as we do to communicate everyday.
